The U.S. Midterm Primaries are ripe upon us and the local officials are already feeling the summer heat. June is one of the most active months of these elections with votes happening across 17 states.
Today we’ve got primary races in California, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, and South Dakota. On the 14th, we’ve got elections in Maine, Nevada, North Dakota, and South Carolina.
As a brief buffer, Virginia hosts its primaries on the 21st. And closing out the month, residents in Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, New York, Oklahoma, and Utah each cast their ballots on the 28th.
Sportsbooks Poise A Change Of Pace
Several 18+ mobile betting sites have suggested that Republicans will flip the House and Senate with a landslide vote. The odds for both are as follows:
Who will control the House in 2022?
- Republicans -1100
- Democrats +650
Who will control the Senate in 2022?
- Republicans -450
- Democrats +275
Still, odds can be deceiving. Most early political betting props are based on historical trends. Party control in Congress almost always changes hands after a President’s first term in office. Just as Democrats took the reins in 2018, Republicans are expected to do the same in 2022.
History Won’t Always Repeat Itself
However, these lines seem to overlook two things: the incumbency advantage and the impact of COVID-19. Many sitting Democrats have strong, unified followings in their respective localities.
And because of the polarity surrounding mask mandates and vaccination, there has been a noticeable change in engagement within party lines—especially in the Northeast. Between 2016 and 2020, we saw a huge shift in this area in which red territories flipped blue.
Consequently, these same states will likely define the outcome of the 2022 Midterms as well as the General Election in 2024.
The five to watch as the primary elections move forward will be Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
Looking Towards A Star-Studded Senate
Georgia and Pennsylvania have already taken the spotlight with celebrity Senate candidates like Herschel Walker and Mehmet Oz. The two have already won the primary votes in their respective states, demonstrating the weight of a Trump endorsement.
Still, securing a win won’t be as easy as it seems. Betting lines predict tight races between opponents in both states. The odds are as follows:
US Senate 2022 – Pennsylvania
- John Fetterman (D) -120
- Mehmet Oz (R) -120
US Senate 2022 – Georgia
- Herschel Walker (R) -120
- Raphael Warnock (D) -120
