Week one of the NFL’s 100th season is officially in the books and odds are starting to shift based on each team’s performance. Let’s take a look at some of the standout performances over the weekend.
Patriots vs. Steelers (33-3)
Before the first snap oddsmakers had the Patriots as pre-season favorites to win Super Bowl LIV mostly due to their SB53 win over the Los Angeles Rams last year. Now as Tom Brady and the bunch acquire Antonio Brown their odds have skyrocketed to +375. The Patriots dominate performance over the Steelers (33-3) in week one also helped propel their odds.
Chiefs vs. Jaguars (40-26)
The Chiefs looked good in their season opener, and Mahomes was on fire as usual. Unfortunately for the Jags, they couldn’t keep up with the Chiefs high-scoring offense. Mahomes went on to throw 378 yards while racking up three touchdowns to WR Sammy Watkins. Tyreek Hill was knocked out of the game early with a shoulder injury.
The Jaguars were under the guidance of new quarterback Nick Foles. He only played about a quarter before he had to leave the game due to injury. Foles suffered a broken left clavicle and will likely miss most if not all of this season.
Saints vs. Texans (30-28)
The Saints vs. Texans were definitely the game of the week. After officials missed the obvious pass interference call in the playoffs last year, fans decided to show up in officiating uniforms and were throwing flags from the start. To the official’s credit, they only messed up one call before half that took time off the clock and led to a missed field goal.
Deshaun Watson and his Houston Texans came out firing on all cylinders and right before half it looked like they might run away with the game. The Saints started slow, but once QB Drew Brees got into a rhythm, it was on. In the final minute, the Saints kicked a field goal to give them a 6-point lead. With only 50 seconds and no timeouts, the Texans drove down the field and scored a touchdown, leaving the Saints 37 seconds on the clock. Drew Brees said no problem and got his team into field goal range with 3 seconds left in the game. Saints kicker Wil Lutz kicked the game-winning field goal and gave the Saints their first win.
Browns vs. Titans (43-13)
No one saw this coming. The Titans were one of the worst teams in 2018, but they are coming out hot this year. The Browns before week one were one of the top five teams predicted to win the Super Bowl according to oddsmakers. They suffered a devastating blow when the Titans came to town and put up 43 points of Cleveland’s home turf.
The Browns have talent on both sides of the ball, but fans are excited about their explosive offense consisting of Baker Mayfield, Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, and Nick Chubb.
